Does Chiptuning have an influence on the insurance?
The short answer: yes, chip tuning can affect your car insuranceAs soon as you adjust the engine power, your car will no longer meet the original factory specifications – and that can affect your policy, premium, and coverage.
Why does Chiptuning decide for insurers?
Insurers calculate their premiums based on manufacturer specifications such as power, weight, and usage. When you chip a car, the power and sometimes the driving behavior also change. For the insurer, this means more risk, which can lead to:
- Higher premium
- Adjustments to cover
- Loss of compensation if the tuning has not been reported
In the worst case, an insurer may decide after an accident not to make any benefits, especially if it turns out that the car has been tuned without notification or registration.
Are you obliged to report chip tuning?

Does this also apply to stage 1 chip tuning?
Yes, even with a relatively mild stage 1 tuning changes the engine management software. This may seem harmless to you, but for an insurer, any adjustment that deviates from the factory settings as a change. It's therefore wise to always report this, no matter how small the adjustment may seem.
