What can you tun to your car?

Tuning can make your car faster, sharper, and more unique – but there are rules. In the Netherlands, you are not allowed to tune your car to adjust, as long as this is safe, does not exceed the MOT standards and your changes report to the RDW and your insurer if necessary.

In short: tuning is allowed, but not everything and not unlimited.

What can you tune?

✔️ Software (chip tuning)
Chip tuning is permitted, provided emission standards and safety requirements are not exceeded. You are required to report this to your insurer and, in the case of significant increases in power, sometimes also to the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority).

✔️ Inlet and exhaust systems
Sport air filters and performance exhausts are permitted as long as they stay within the noise standards and do not cause any error codes.

✔️ Rims and tires
As long as the dimensions remain within the margins and the wheels do not protrude beyond the bodywork, you may modify it.

✔️ Lighting (limited)
LED lighting is permitted if it is type-approved. Colored or flashing exterior lighting is prohibited.

✔️ Suspension and ride height
Coilovers or lowering springs are permitted as long as the car remains safe: sufficient ground clearance, the correct ride height, and a stable wheelbase are required. The car must be able to drive over speed bumps without any problems.

✔️ Bodywork and interior
Wraps, spoilers, sports seats or custom steering wheels are allowed, as long as they do not affect visibility or safety.

What are you not allowed to tune (or only with restrictions)?

Removing the catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter or EGR
This is prohibited and will result in a failed MOT. Software that disables these systems is also illegal.

Too loud exhausts
A sporty sound is allowed, but the exhaust system must remain within the legal noise limits.

Bright or colored lighting
Blue, red or flashing front lights are only permitted for emergency services.

License plate and speed masking systems
Folding license plates, speed camera tape or jammer equipment are prohibited.

Do you have to report tuning?

Yes, always with the insurer. In the case of major technical changes – such as engine power, chassis adjustments or engine changes – also with the RDWIf you don't do this, you may have problems in the event of damage, inspection, or police checks.
