What is an HPFP?
When you get serious about tuning of a modern turbo engine, you will soon come into contact with the term HPFPThis fuel pump plays a key role in direct injection engines – and is often the bottleneck in performance upgradesBut what exactly is an HPFP, and when do you need one?
What does HPFP mean?
HPFP stands for High Pressure Fuel Pump – or: high-pressure fuel pumpThis pump supplies fuel under extremely high pressure (often between 100 and 200 bar) to the injectors, so that the fuel mixture can be injected directly into the cylinders.
Modern engines with direct injection (such as TSI, FSI, GDI) use an HPFP as standard. Without this pump, direct injection is simply not possible.
What does an HPFP do?
The HPFP is often driven by the camshaft and works together with the Low Pressure Fuel Pump (LPFP). While the LPFP delivers the fuel from the tank at low pressure, the HPFP provides the high pressure required for precisely timed injections in the combustion chamber.
At higher power and modified ECUs the engine requires more fuel under higher pressure – and that is exactly where the standard HPFP often falls short.
When do you need an HPFP upgrade?
An HPFP upgrade is essential at:
Stage 2 of 3 tuning
Switching to E85 ethanol
Larger turbos or raised turbo pressure
ECU upgrades that require more injection volume
Fuel pressure problems or error codes at full load
A too weak HPFP leads to:
❌ Loss of power
❌ Too lean mixture (dangerous!)
❌ Pingling or detonation
❌ Fuel cuts and emergency mode
Advantages of an HPFP upgrade
✔️ Constant fuel pressure under load
✔️ More power without the risk of lean running
✔️ Suitable for ethanol and racing fuels
✔️ Reliability with tuned engines
✔️ Optimal support for your injectors and ECU

Frequently asked questions about HPFP
Is an HPFP difficult to install?
The installation is technical, but with experience it can be done easily. Many upgrades are possible upgrade kit Available (e.g., larger plungers). If in doubt, have it done by a specialist.
Can I upgrade only my LPFP?
No – at higher powers you often have to upgrade both pumps for a stable and reliable fuel system.
Does an HPFP upgrade make a difference without tuning?
Not necessarily. The benefits are most evident with tuned or ethanol-powered engines that require more fuel.
