An ignition coil – also known as a spark coil – is an essential component of a petrol vehicle’s engine. Without an ignition coil, there is no spark; and without a spark, there is no combustion. It may seem like a small component, but it plays a major role in keeping your engine running.

What exactly does an ignition coil do?

The ignition coil converts the low voltage from the battery (12V) into a high voltage (up to 40,000 volts). This high voltage is needed to create a strong spark at the spark plug, which ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder.

Each cylinder in your engine has its own spark plug, and in modern engines often its own ignition coil as well.

How does it work?

  1. The ECU (engine control unit) sends a signal to the ignition coil.

  2. The coil builds up a magnetic field.

  3. This field collapses, converting low voltage into high voltage.

  4. That voltage goes to the spark plug, which produces a spark.

  5. Combustion begins – and the engine delivers power.

This process occurs several times per second per cylinder, and must be precisely timed and reliable.

What if the ignition coil isn’t working properly?

A faulty ignition coil can lead to:

  • Poor engine performance

  • Stuttering or hesitation

  • Loss of power

  • Unburned fuel in the exhaust

  • Long-term engine damage

That is why it is important to use good-quality ignition coils – especially in tuned engines or under heavy loads.
