The BMW B58 is perhaps the most rewarding six-cylinder engine around at the moment. Reliable, powerful straight from the factory and extremely responsive to the right hardware. If you want to build a proper Stage 1 setup, it almost always starts with a B58 Downpipe. The original Downpipe with OPF/catalytic converter is, in fact, the biggest bottleneck in the exhaust system: it traps back pressure, slows down turbo build-up and dampens both power and sound. Replace it, and the engine literally comes to life.
Why a B58 Downpipe makes such a difference
The B58 runs with plenty of headroom on the turbo as standard. As soon as you remove the back pressure with a 4.5″ Downpipe, the turbo can build up pressure more quickly and the charge temperature stays lower. The result is quicker low-end response, a fuller mid-range and that distinctive, deep exhaust note for which the B58 is renowned. Combined with a remap (Stage 1), you’ll get the most out of the hardware, as the software can utilise the extra flow. Without a Downpipe, a Stage 1 map quickly runs up against the OPF backpressure.
Stage 1 on the B58: Downpipe, Charge Pipe and turbo inlet
A complete Stage 1 upgrade on the B58 centres on three bolt-on components that work in synergy. The Downpipe improves flow after the turbo. The Charge Pipe replaces the vulnerable OEM plastic unit between the intercooler and the Intake — that plastic is notorious for cracking under increased boost. And the turbo inlet (elbow) widens the Intake side, allowing the turbo to draw in air more easily. Together with a good Air Intake, they form a package that allows the engine to breathe from Intake to exhaust, without requiring any modifications to the internal components.
What can you expect in terms of power?
Pure hardware without a remap mainly delivers better response, less heat soak and more sound. The real gains come with a Stage 1 map on top: depending on the model and fuel type, you’re quickly looking at a significant boost in horsepower and torque, particularly in the mid-range where you feel it most on the road. It’s important that the B58 Downpipe and Intake support the map — software and hardware must be properly matched. If you’re planning to upgrade to Stage 2 later on, this foundation is exactly what you need.
Installation, remapping and points to note
The ENDURA parts are designed as direct bolt-ons with OEM connections, so installation is straightforward for most DIY enthusiasts on a lift. Be aware that an error code for the OPF/catalytic converter may appear after fitting a Downpipe; this can be resolved via the remap. Consider fitting a turbo inlet and Air Intake at the same time, so that the Intake side doesn’t become a bottleneck. If you’re driving an OPF model (G-series), choose the correct OPF variant of the Downpipe — always check your exact engine code and chassis number before ordering.
In short: a B58 Downpipe is the foundation of any serious BMW build. Combine it with a Charge Pipe, turbo inlet and a good map, and your 140i, 340i or M340i will feel like a completely different car — without compromising the engine’s reliability.
