Kun je alle auto’s chiptunen?

In theory, you can chip-tune many cars, but not all cars are suitable – or actually benefit from it. Whether chip-tuning is possible and worthwhile depends on factors such as the year of manufacture, the type of engine management system and whether the car has a turbo.

In short: modern turbocharged engines are excellent candidates for tuning, whilst older or naturally aspirated engines often yield fewer benefits.

Which cars are suitable?
✔️ turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines
These engines often deliver significant gains in power and torque through software adjustments alone. Examples include the 1.2 TSI, 2.0 TDI, 1.5 EcoBoost, and so on.

✔️ Cars with electronic throttle and ECU (Electronic Control Unit)
Virtually all cars from around 2000 onwards have a programmable ECU that allows for tuning.

✔️ Models with significant software restrictions
Some cars are ‘restricted’ from the factory for tax or market-related reasons and can therefore be optimised relatively easily.

When is chip tuning not possible or pointless?
Older cars without a programmable ECU
Vehicles manufactured before around 1995 often lack an OBD port or modern control electronics. Replacing the ECU is sometimes possible, but it is riskier and usually not cost-effective.

Naturally aspirated engines without a turbo
There is little to be gained here – often just 5 to 10 pk extra, at a relatively high cost.

Cars with locked ECUs
Some modern makes, such as BMW and Mercedes, have secured ECUs that are not easy to tune. This requires specialised equipment – which is not always available.

Advice from JT-Products

At JT-Products, we do not carry out chip tuning ourselves, but we do supply essential performance parts that support tuning safely and reliably, such as air intakes, intercoolers, fuel systems, spark plugs and downpipes.

Not sure whether your car is suitable for chip tuning? Then have a pre-scan carried out by an experienced tuner first and discuss your requirements and objectives. We’ll then be happy to help you with the right hardware to get the most out of your setup.
