Wat is een blow-off valve?

When it comes to tuning turbocharged engines, the blow-off valve is a household name. Not just because of the iconic sound it makes when you lift off the accelerator, but above all because of the role this component plays within the boost pressure system. But what exactly is a blow-off valve, and when is it actually useful?

What does a blow-off valve do?

A blow-off valve (BOV) is a pressure relief valve used in turbocharged cars. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the throttle valve closes abruptly. However, the turbo continues to spin for a moment, forcing air into the system. That built-up pressure needs to go somewhere.

The blow-off valve ensures that this excess pressure is quickly vented to the outside air. This prevents damage to the turbo, loss of boost and overloading of the Intake. And yes – it also causes that familiar ‘pssshh’ sound.

Difference between a blow-off valve and a diverter valve

Although both relieve excess turbo pressure, the difference lies in how they do so:

  • blow-off valve: releases the pressure into the atmosphere (open system)

  • diverter valve: redirects the pressure back into the Intake system (closed system)

Please note: not every engine management system is compatible with a blow-off valve. Particularly in cars with a closed-loop mass air flow system (such as many VAG models), this can lead to error messages or fluctuating revs.

Why choose a blow-off valve?

✔️ Protects the turbo from pressure spikes
✔️ Prevents boost lag and improves throttle response
✔️ Iconic sound for enthusiasts
✔️ Increases the durability of the turbo system
✔️ Essential for tuning and ECU upgrades

Types of blow-off valves

At JT Products, we distinguish between several types:

  • Single piston: simple, works well with standard tuning

  • Dual piston: better sealing and faster response

  • Adjustable: can be adjusted for different turbo pressures and preferences

  • Hybrid valves: combine a diverter and blow-off function

We’d be happy to help you choose the right variant for your setup.

Frequently asked questions about blow-off valves

Does a blow-off valve always make a noise?
Yes, the distinctive “pssshh” sound is characteristic. The intensity depends on the type and settings.

Is a blow-off valve legal?
In some countries, a blow-off valve without an air filter or return pipe may not be roadworthy. Always check with your garage or the RDW.

Can I fit a blow-off valve myself?
Yes, provided you have some technical knowledge. However, we do advise that you carry out the work carefully or have it done by a specialist.
