When tuning or optimising a car with a turbocharged engine, sooner or later you’ll come across the term ‘diverter valve’. This small but powerful component plays an essential role in both the performance and protection of your engine. But what exactly does a diverter valve do?
What is a diverter valve?
A diverter valve (also known as a DV or blow-off valve) is a pressure-regulating valve that forms part of a car’s turbo and boost pressure system. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the throttle valve closes. The built-up turbo pressure then suddenly has nowhere to go – and that can be damaging to the turbo.
The diverter valve ensures that this excess pressure is vented quickly and in a controlled manner, usually back into the Intake, so that the system does not build up excess pressure and the turbo is not damaged.
What is the difference between a diverter valve and a blow-off valve?
Although they are often confused, there is a clear difference:

diverter valve: directs the excess turbo pressure back into the Intake system

blow-off valve: releases the pressure into the atmosphere, often with a distinctive ‘pssshh’ sound
In modern cars with a closed-loop mass air flow sensor (such as VAG engines), a diverter valve is usually the best choice.
