Wat is een turbo inlet

If you’re working on optimising your turbocharged engine, sooner or later you’ll come across the turbo inlet. At first glance, it looks like a simple little pipe, but make no mistake: the turbo inlet plays a crucial role in the air supply to your turbo – and therefore in your power output, throttle response and boost pressure.

But what exactly is a turbo inlet, and why is upgrading it so popular amongst tuners?

What is a turbo inlet?

A turbo inlet is the component that channels air from the Intake manifold to the inlet side of the turbo. Think of it as the air supply pipe to the turbocharger. The shape, diameter and material of this pipe directly influence the amount of air the turbo can draw in – and therefore your engine’s performance.

What does an upgraded turbo inlet do?

In many cars, the standard turbo inlet is:

  • Relatively narrow in diameter

  • Made of plastic

  • Prone to deformation under pressure

  • Not ideal in terms of airflow (restrictions, bends, ridges)

An aftermarket turbo inlet (e.g. made of aluminium or silicone) offers:

✔️ A larger diameter for greater air volume
✔️ A smoother interior for reduced turbulence
✔️ A stronger construction for higher turbo pressure
✔️ Better compatibility with larger turbos or Intake upgrades

This results in:

✔️ Faster Spool-up (turbo response)

✔️ More power at the same turbo pressure

✔️ Less pressure drop and better efficiency

✔️ More ‘breathing room’ for your turbo

When is a turbo inlet upgrade a good idea?

A turbo inlet upgrade is a popular and relatively inexpensive tuning modification, especially if you:

  • have had your ECU tuned (Stage 1 or higher)

  • Use a performance air filter or cold Air Intake

  • Want to upgrade your turbo

  • Want more airflow or quicker response without major modifications

  • Your engine type (e.g. VAG 2.0 TSI, BMW B58, Ford Ecoboost)

  • Current and planned tuning

  • turbo upgrades or Intake setup

Whether you’re looking for a subtle improvement in airflow or a complete Air Intake upgrade – we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

Frequently asked questions about turbo inlets

Does a turbo inlet make my car louder?
Yes, you’ll often hear a bit more of a ‘whoosh’ from the turbo, especially when combined with an open-air air filter or Intake.

Is installation difficult?
For many vehicles, it’s straightforward using basic tools. Do bear in mind that space can be tight, and ensure a proper seal.

Do I need tuning for a turbo inlet upgrade?
No, most upgrades are plug-and-play. However, the effect is optimal when combined with tuning.
