Stage 4 chip tuning is the highest level of engine tuning and means that your car has been modified to such an extent that virtually nothing is original anymore. This includes a completely modified engine build, larger turbos, modified fuel systems, gearbox reinforcement, ECU reprogramming and, often, the use of racing fuel.
Whereas Stage 1 and 2 are primarily software-based and involve minor mechanical modifications, Stage 4 takes the car right up to Motorsport level.
What does Stage 4 involve?
Stage 4 tuning is purely bespoke and usually consists of a combination of high-quality performance parts and advanced software tuning. Common modifications include:
- Forge d pistons and connecting rods
- Fully customised ECU and TCU software
- Large custom turbo or twin-turbo setup
- Reinforced clutch or gearbox
- Fuel pumps and injectors suitable for E85 or racing fuel
- Racing Intercooler, custom exhaust system and Air Intake
- Reinforced engine mounts and improved cooling systems
- Possibly a standalone ECU (such as Syvecs or MaxxECU)
Sometimes even the engine capacity or compression ratio is adjusted for maximum performance.
How much power does Stage 4 tuning deliver?
The power gain with stage 4 is enormous, but depends heavily on the starting point. For example:
- From 150 pk to 400+ pk in smaller turbocharged engines
- From 300 pk to 700+ pk in V6 or V8 engines
- Racing cars with 800 to 1000+ pk are no exception
Please note: such power outputs require more than just tuning – it involves a complete rebuild of the vehicle, with every component being optimised.
Is Stage 4 suitable for road use?
In most cases, no. Stage 4 cars are:
- No longer road-legal (due to emissions, noise or modifications)
- Highly sensitive to maintenance, fuel quality and temperature
- Only suitable for track days, quarter-mile races or as a show car
- More expensive to run and tune
