The Airtec Motorsport Secondary Intercooler Kit for the Ford Focus Mk4 ST is an additional Intercooler designed for track use and sporty road driving, developed at Airtec’s headquarters in the United Kingdom.
In the upper section of the Focus Mk4’s grille, space is limited by the Intake system and air ducting, meaning a front-mount Intercooler spanning the full height of the grille is not possible. Airtec therefore sought a way to further improve cooling and reduce the Intake air temperature without the need for any cutting or modification to the car.
The solution is a second Intercooler mounted beneath the car behind the underbody panel and supplied with fresh air via an air duct. By incorporating this intercooler in place of a section of pipework, the total capacity of the system increases significantly without affecting either the original Intercooler or the one upgraded by Airtec.
In back-to-back road tests over eight consecutive runs, heat dissipation improved by 41 per cent and the inlet temperature was halved (from an average of 120.7 to 60.0 degrees). Measurements of the intercooler’s outlet temperature showed a peak reduction of 36.7 degrees, or a reduction of 76.4 per cent, with an average reduction of 72.5 per cent over four consecutive runs.
The kit fits neatly behind the sump and can be easily reverted to standard. The comprehensive fitting kit includes silicone hoses from Pro Hoses with all necessary fixing materials and a step-by-step fitting guide.
